How To Use Textures

This tutorial is for Photoshop 7, and assumes at least a basic knowledge of the program.

Now, in the How To Make Textures tutorial, we made this texture:

Now we're going to learn how to use it. Choose a picture you want to use the texture with. I'm going to use this icon sized screencap of Daniel Jackson:

Copy & paste the texture as a new layer onto the cap. I'm going to resize the pictures to make them easier for viewing.

Now, the key to using layers, is different blend modes.

Now, what I'm going to do, is just show you what effect each blend mode has:

Blend Mode

Now, what you can do, is duplicate the texture layer, and use two different blend modes - here are a few examples:

1st Texture Layer
2nd Texture Layer

Luminosity, 45%

Difference, 45%

Admittedly, these blend modes do work best when different texture layers are used, not the same texture layer, but it does have it's charm as used here.

But, I hope you can see how textures rely on blend modes to be used to their best effect - have fun with it!
