Texture
Effects Tutorial
This tutorial
is for Jasc Paintshop Pro. (The caps are from PSP8, but it also works in PSP7)
This is a neat
little effect for icon graphics (and other graphics too), which involves using
textures, and colour effects. When you're finished, you should have an icon
looking something like this:

But to start
off, we need an original base. I'm using one of my old Snape base icons. It's
very basic, as you can see:

Once you've got your base icon open in Painshop Pro, you'll need to duplicate
the layer.

Now on that top layer you're going to put a texture. Do this by going Effects>Texture
Effects>Texture... another window will pop up.

You can select any texture you want. I chose a Dither texture, which creates
little boxes and grids across the image. You can play around with the settings
as much as you like; experimentation is the key! If you're stuck for anything
else to do, just mimic the settings I've got here to start with.
Your icon should now look a bit like this:

Duplicate the textureized layer. Set the bottom layer to Dodge, and the top
layer to Overlay. Set the dodged layer to 50% opacity. The layer palette should
look like this:

Your icon should now look something like this:

Now, take the eraser tool ( ).
Choose a circular brush, and set the size to 20, hardness at around 25, and
the opacity at 25.You can vary the settings depending on the graphic you're
working with.
Use the eraser to erase the texture effects around the face, and/or hands
and body of the person in the icon. Do this on both the dodged and overlayed
layers.

If the erased area's are looking out of place now, duplicate the background
layer (which should be the original image of Snape, in this case). Set that
layer to Overlay, and put the opacity down to 60. Erase the surrounding areas.

Now save the icon...! I've used the PNG format, to preserve the image as
best I can. You're left with a gorgeous icon, with a beautiful background
effect!
