Silhouette Tutorial

This tutorial is for Jasc Paintshop Pro. (Screencaps are from PSP8, but it also works in PSP7)

For this tutorial, we're going to create a silhouetted image, like this:

Now, it's easier than it looks! First, we'll start with a basic background, I used this:

First, we need to edit the Brightness & Contrast.

Set the Brightness to 30, and the Contrast to 98.

The image will now look like this:

Now, we need to decrease the colour depth. Select Image>Decrease Colour Depth>2 Colours...

Now, set the Palette component to Grey Values, Reduction Method to Nearest Colour, and Palette Weight to Weighted.

The image should now look like this:

Increase the colour depth to 16 million colours (24 Bit). This is located under Image>Increase Colour Depth (below the 'Decrease Colour Depth' you used earlier).

Now duplicate the background layer. Soften the top layer.

Reduce the transparency of the softened layer to around 50.

Now you have your silhouette. Now it's just a case of using gradients to create the final finish.

Create a two new layers. Fill them both with the gradient of your choice. Set the top layer to multiply, and the bottom layer to screen. Decrease the opacity of the screened layer to 50%. Your layer palette should look like this:

Your silhouette image is now complete! Try playing around with the gradient layer options, using different gradients, different modes and opacitys. For example, try using just one screened layer at 100%. It'll look like this:

Have fun!
