Rainbow Tutorial

This tutorial is for Painshop Pro. (The caps are from PSP8, but it also works in PSP7)

For this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to create a rainbow effect like this one:

To start, you need a base picture. I used this one:

It's a good idea to use a black and white image to start off. This will prevent the base colours from interferring with the rainbow effect.

Create a new layer.

On this layer, we're going to use a gradient fill. Select the gradient tool from the colour menu:

The gradient I'm using is a slightly customized version of the rainbow gradient included in PSP. Click on the gradient example, and select the spectrum gradient. Then click on the 'Edit' button below the example on the pop up window:

The only thing you will need to edit is the transparency:

Click on the black box pointing at the right hand side of the bar (at Location: 100%), and change the transparency to 100. The black box should turn into a white box.

Now the gradient is ready to be used. Return to your image. Select the new layer you created earlier (Raster 1), and fill the new layer with the gradient. You can use the paintbrush tool set on full opacity at a large setting, or the fill paintbucket. It should look like this:

Set the rainbow layer to Overlay, and the opacity to 80.

It should look like this now:

And you're done! You can add more effects if you like, such as pixelating, or dithering, or whatever. Have fun!
