Pixel Effect Tutorial

This tutorial is for Jasc Paintshop Pro. This tutorial makes use of of thumbnails for convenience.

A pixel effect is a very cool, and simple to use effect. It doesnt always look good, but on most landscapes of 3D style backgrounds, it can look beautiful. We're going to use this image as our base:

Start, by duplicating the layer.

Make sure you have the top (the newly duplicated layer) selected. Now, use the Pixelate effect:

Adjust the settings to suit the image size. If the image is particularly large (1024x768), make the pixel size around 25x25 (always make sure they're symmetrical), if it's medium size (800x600), I'd say go for 20x20, and if it's small (640x480) go for 15x15. It all depends on the effect you're after. It should look like this:

Now you've successfully pixelated the top layer, it's time to adjust it. You need to set the transparency much lower:

You can set the transparency higher or lower depending on your preferences. Now you've done that, it should be finished! It should look like this:

You can set the pixelated layer to dodge, or multiply, or screen, or whatever, it's up to you. I like it just set on normal, but play around! You might find something you like!
