Full Icon Tutorial for Photoshop 7 and ImageReady 7.

This tutorial assumes at least a basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.

How to make this icon:

Starting in Photoshop, first we need a base. I cheated with this one, and used some bases that I made last year:

Duplicate the background layer (Layer>Duplicate Layer...).

Now, we're going to learn how to use a handy little tool known as a Gradient Map. Making sure you've got the top layer selected (so the gradient map will go on the top), to to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map...

I'm going to use a red to yellow gradient, which if I remember correctly, came from Crumblingwalls:

Now click OK, and the icon should look like this:

Now we're going to repeat the process, but select a different gradient.

Now the icon should look like this:

So we're going to change the blend mode of the new gradient map to 'colour':

So that the icon looks like this:

Not too bad, huh? Now, we're going to lighten it up a bit. Create a new layer (Layer>New>Layer...). Making sure you've got white selected in your forground colour:

Select the gradient tool , and select the gradient that has the forground fading into transparent:

Now, taking the tool, and starting at the top right hand side of the picture, drag the gradient diagonally across the picture:

Now the icon should look something like this:

Now, here's the fun bit. Adding that snazzy lighting! I used an old lighting texture I've had on my computer for eons, and cut a 100x100 square out of it:

Now, copy & paste this as a new layer on your icon. Set the blend mode to 'Lighten', and pop it just under the layer with your gradient light on.

The icon should look like this:

Now we'll just stick a bit of text on this. Using Arial Black at 14pt, and set to 'crisp', I've written the word 'abyss' in lowercase in the top righthand corner.

And under that, I just put a small line, 1 pixel high, to underline it, with a motion blur at 0° and 50px:

Move the line to the right a little, and then it should look like this:

Make sure that when you save it now, you save it as a PSD file if you want to continue on to the animation part of the tutorial.
