Full Icon Tutorial for Photoshop 7

This tutorial assumes at least a basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.

How to make this icon:

First, we need a base. I'm using two different pictures for this icon, from screencaps I took of the movie. I've already cropped and resized them:

Now, I used the first one as the main base (the closeup of Harry), and copyed and pasted the wider shot over the top. Do this by selecting all:

And then Ctrl+C to copy, and Ctrl+V to paste.

The layer palette should look like this now:

Now, duplicate the background layer twice, and position all three above Layer 1. Set all the layers to Screen, 100%. The icon should look like this now:

As you can see, part of Harry's shirt is obscuring the wider shot behind him. So we'll just erase it, using a soft brush, just over the area below Harry's patronus, on the two screened layers.

Now, select all again, and copy merged (Shft+Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) as a new layer, positioned above all the layers. Leave this as normal (think of it as a secondary base), and duplicate it. Set the top, duplicated layer to screen. Now, here's where it gets interesting!

First, with the top, screened layer selected, select Image>Adjustments>Auto Color:

With the top, screened layer still selected, to to Image>Adjustments>Color Balance...

A window should pop up looking like this:

Now this takes alot of experimenting, and there's really no right or wrong with this. The preview button is checked, so we can see what the image looks like on the screen as we're sliding the arrows along the bars. Now, we want the screened layer to end up looking a little something like this:

When it's screened on the actual icon, it will look like this:

Make sure you use all of the tone balances - Shadow, Midtones, and Highlights. In this case, we want to have ALOT of blue, magenta, and a mix of red & cyan. Play with it until you get something that looks similar to what we've got above, or give it your own colour scheme!

Now, once that's done, sharpen the screened layer.

Now select the smudge tool. Used the smudge tool around Harry's face. Do this on both the screened layer, and the layer under it.

Now here comes the fun with adding the colour! Create a new layer.

Fill it with a dark, dusty blue colour, like #143057. Set that layer to Exclusion, 100%:

Now the icon should look like this:

Create another new layer and fill it with a a sort of peachy tan skin colour, like #F1DDBB. Set this layer to Linear Burn, 100%.

The icon should look like this:

It's still not quite there yet, so we'll add another new layer, filled with a mustardy brown colour like #765D31. Set this layer to Color, 30%.

The icon should look like this now:

We'll add one more colour layer (last one, I swear!). This time we'll fill it with good old jet black, and set it to Multiply at 18%. The icon should look like this:

Now, at this point, it looks alright, but I dont think the colour in Harry's face is standing out enough. So we'll duplicate the secondary base layer - the one that looks like this:

And Auto Colour it:

So that it looks like this:

Oooh, how pretty! Now, we'll add a thin border - I'm using a brush I made:

And I've set it to Multiply.

And then I added some text, and was done.
