Full Icon Tutorial for Paintshop Pro 8

This tutorial assumes at least a basic knowledge of Paintshop Pro

How to make this icon:

First, we need a base. I used a publicity picture of Sirius (Gary Oldman) from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I cropped and resized it:

Duplicate this layer (Layers>Duplicate). Now, it's a bit fuzzy. So, we're going to sharpen the top layer. Go to Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen More. Now it looks like this:

Now, we'll duplicate the sharpened layer twice. Set the top layer to Soft Light, and the one under it to Screen:

Select the Soft Light Layer, and desaturise it by going to Adjust>Hue & Saturation>Hue/Saturation/Lightness... and select Hue: 0, Lightness: 0, and Saturation: 100.

Now we're going to add some brushes. Create a new layer between the Soft Light and Screen layers. I'm going to use several of my own brushes on seperate layers. ALWAYS PUT BRUSHES ON A NEW LAYER. These are the brushes I'm going to be using (to find out how to use them click here):

Use the first two brushes, on two different layers, in white.

Now, use the third brush with a pastel gradient. I used this one:

And the fourth one, above the gradient brush layer, in white again:

Now, create another new layer above the top Soft Light layer. This is where we're going to do the border. Take the rectangular selection tool, and set the mode to add, and the 'feather' to 1. Check the anti-alias box.

Select around the edges - about three pixels each side, so it looks something like this:

Using the fill tool, fill the selection (make sure you have the new top layer selected) with white, preferably with a texture selected like 'Lands' or 'Plastic' (a soft texture). Deselect the area.

Again, create a new layer, and using the selection tool again, create several vertical selected lines (if the selections seem to merge, it's because of the feathering - dont worry about it!):

Fill them with the same white colour (with the texture) as you did for the border:

You can do the same on the bottom on the horizontal if you like. I'm just going to add just one horizontal line.

Now to add some text! I'm going to have black text, using the font Georgia set at size 4, all capitals, with italics, and the kerning set to 440. The text is some lyrics from Dark Rising by Mercury Rev, and reads, "I never dreamed I'd lose you, in my dreams I'm always strong". The text is on the very top layer.

I think the text is a bit too strong, so I'll decrease the opacity to 55%.

And I'll call that done!
