Full Icon Tutorial 2 for Paintshop Pro 8
This tutorial assumes at least a basic knowledge of Paintshop Pro
How to make this icon:
First, we need a base.
I used a picture from one of the posters for Harry Potter and the Prisoner
of Azkaban.
Duplicate this layer (Layers>Duplicate). Set the duplicate layer to 'Soft
Light':
Create a new layer below the Soft Light layer. Fill it with a dark dusty blue
colour (#013460), and set it to Exclusion:

Now, that looks pretty ugly! Lets add a bit of colour! Create a new layer
above the Exclusion layer, and fill it with this gradient:
Set this layer to Multiply, and reduce the opacity to around 80%. It should
look like this:
That's still not quite right, so we'll add another gradient layer.
We'll set this one to Multiply too, but we'll keep it at 100% opacity.
It's not quite bright enough, so we'll add yet another gradient layer!
We'll set this one to Overlay, and reduce it's opacity to 90%:
It still doesnt stand out enough. We'll use the same gradient again on a new
layer, but this time we'll set it to Multiply at 50%.
Now then, that looks really nice! But I want to make his eyes stand out, and
his lips. Create a new layer. Select the brush tool, and set it to the smallest
brush you have. Select white. Now, draw a line over Harry's lower lip.
Now, using the smudge tool, smudge it across his lip, softening it out, to
create a nice shine.
Do the same with Harry's eyes, using black instead.

Now, move the layer containing the eyeliner and lip shine down a few layers,
til it's above the second gradient (Multiply, 100%). It should now look like
this:

Using a brush I made myself, I added a swirly pattern to the blank area to
the left of Harry's face. The brush was black, and I set it to Soft Light
at 40% opacity.

Now, I added a border. It was either from quebelly
or teh_indy,
but I'm not sure which! As it's not mine to give out, I wont post an image
to make it out of.

Now it's just a matter of adding text. I wrote 'hypnotic' in a font called 'Violation'
(availible here) at size 20, and 'gaze' in 'Arial Black'
at size 10.

I converted the text to a raster layer (Layers>Convert to Raster Layer),
and then using the Deform tool ( ),
I rotated the text so it followed Harry's cheekbone:

And it's done! I hope you learned something with this tutorial :)
