Blends Tutorial

This tutorial is for Painshop Pro. (The caps are from PSP8, but it also works in PSP7)

There are many different ways of making blends. Keep in mind that this isnt the only way of doing it; as I always say, experimentation is the best way to find out new graphics techniques that suit you best. Also, I'm definitely not the best blend maker on the web, so there's definitely room for improvement on this...!

For this tutorial, we're going to use three images. You can download these images by clicking on the thumbnails below:

Create a new image. Make it 500 pixels wide, by 300 pixels high, and give it a black background. Copy and paste the above images as new layers.

You can arrange them however you want on the image. I chose to put Harry in the middle on the front layer, and Ron and Hermione behind him. Make sure the layers overlay by quite alot.

Now, make a rectangular selection down the edge of the Harry picture. It should look like this:

Do the same on the other edge by holding the shift button down while you draw the selection. Then go to Selection>Modify>Feather:

Another window will open. It will look like this:

I put the Number of pixels down as 60. Now, delete the selection by pressing the 'Delete' key on your keyboard. You will have to do this several times to get the desired effect. Do it until there isnt a visible line to define the edge of the picture. It should look like this once you've done it:

De-select the image (Selections>Select None)

You could leave it at that if you wanted to, but I think the colours are a bit too different, so I'd flatten the layers (Layers>Merge>Merge All (Flatten)). Then, duplicate the layer.

Once you're on the duplicated layer, colourize it.

Now, you can choose any colour you want for this. I'm going to use a deep red. (Hue: 0, Saturation: 200).

It should look like this:

Now, to be fair, that looks horrible. So, we need to have a little fun with it. I'm going to duplicate it again, motion blur the top layer, and add some blinds (colour: white, opacity: 15, both horizontal and vertical). You can do anything you want to make it more interesting. Overlay makes it look very weird, and in a good way! I added a border to finish it off. This is my result:
